Born in Minatitlán, Veracruz, México, I war brought and raised in Racine, Wisconsin at the age of four. Work-ethic, perseverance, and hope were instilled in me from my parents. Characteristics I hold close as I navigate life through dance. Self-reflection is how I layer the importance of staying true to where I come from, who I am, and where I go.
My first dance was in Minatitlán where I wore a customary outfit and learned to dance with a partner. Racine, WI introduced me to theater and improv explorations of dance as a way to communicate without words. Milwaukee (2009-2013) is where I had my first modern and ballet classes while learning somatic choreographic approaches, while Chicago (2013-2016) provided opportunities to dance and choreograph professionally. Now, Minneapolis (2017-present) becomes a place where I focus on what exists and re-discover its significance to who I am.
Post college I faced the financial challenge to choreograph on others. Solo became the vehicle for sharing my vision as both choreographer and dancer. This path led to a continuous conversation with myself of what is important to share, how to convey my internal world, and prioritize truth over spectacle via solo. Self awareness and self reflection forms a career navigating the human condition felt by being a queer-bilingual-immigrant.
Time. Space. Introspection. These motifs are my lens in navigating life. The spectrum between tension and calmness of who I am through my experiences informs the art I create. I reflect, dream, question, and challenge myself first in order to do so intentionally with others. This solo path sometimes seen as self-centered is my way of knowing who I am when I am with you — on and off the dance floor.
